Naples (Napoli in Italian) is capital of Campania region and Naples province. The population of the city is 2 253 964 inhabitants (according to data from the end of 2008). The area of Naples is 117.3 square kilometers. Naples is located between two volcanic areas – Vezuviy and Flegreyskite fields on the coast of Naples Bay.
The city is famous for its rich history, art, culture, gastronomy and pizza. Naples is synonym of pizza.
The central and main square is Piazza del Plebiscito. Eastward of the square is Royal Palace, which is one of the residences of the Burbonskite kings of Naples. Westward of the square is San Francesco di Paola church. Its facade has a portal with six pillars and two ionic columns. The church inside is circular with two side chapels. The dome is 53 meters high. Nearby is the Teatro di San Carlo - the oldest opera on the Italian peninsula. Naples is known for its castles. The ancient Castel Nuovo, the new castle or Maschio Angioino, was completed in 1282 and is architectural symbol of Naples. Castel dell'Ovo - the egg castle is located on a small island - Megarides. The Sant'Elmo, completed in 1329 is shaped like a star. There are many museums and churches in Naples. The underground geothermal zone of Naples is interesting. This is a system of caves and structures that are result of mining activities throughout the centuries. There are tours in the underground Naples, and you can even visit a museum there.
