Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the largest city in the country. The city has 304 614 inhabitants (data from 2008). The area of the city is 141.5 square kilometers. Sarajevo is located in Sarajevo valley. It is surrounded by the Alps. The city is near the Milyachka River.

Sarajevo is famous for its religion diversity - Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism.

It is curious that the city had suffered the longest siege in modern military history during the Bosnian war.

Festivals are organized in Sarajevo. Sarajevo Film Festival was founded in 1995. It became a major film festival on the Balkan Peninsula. Sarajevo Winter Festival is held every winter since 1984 - 1985. Sarajevo Jazz Festival is in the first week of November. The biggest of all festivals is “the nights of Bashcharshiya”. It is annually organized from the 1st to the 31th of July. It includes classical music, rock'n'roll, folk music, theater, opera, ballet. There are also various exhibitions of books, movies and more. All this aims to show different aspects of national culture.
